CURRENT TECHNOLOGIES
μLot® Platform Technology
Background
The current understanding of disease mechanisms has led to an increase in the potential for scientists and the pharmaceutical industry to develop treatments targeted at specific molecular targets. However, many of these novel potential therapies are currently based on molecules too complex to manufacture and as such not viable medicines to pursue for development. To address this specific need in efficiently manufacture complex molecules at reasonable costs, Swedish Biomimetics 3000® has been funding and fostering translational research of the µLot® - Platform Technology with the ultimate aim to bring new pharmaceuticals to patients who suffer from diseases for which effective therapies currently are lacking.
The Market Need
A review of pharmaceutical classes has identified two families – peptides and oligonucleotides- which are particularly subject to cost pressures, but have the potential to treat a very wide range of diseases.
A detailed look at these classes revealed that:
- Peptides and nucleotides are very expensive to produce (high cost of goods)
- Peptides and nucleotides are high growth sectors with approximately double the market growth rate of the rest of the sector.
